2012 Masters — Sergia Garcia dealing with infected nail on left hand – ESPN

Sergio Garcia will begin play at the Masters tomorrow while struggling to fight an infected fingernail. Infections of the fingernail, also called a paronycia, are common. Risk factors that could have led to Mr. Garcia’s infection include prolonged, repetitive, forceful gripping on the golf club; the hand being covered by a glove, which could have “sealed in” the bacteria; and a history of a previous nail infection.

Fingernail infections are usually treated with oral antibiotics, warm water soaks, and removal of the edge of the fingernail. One option when a person has repeated fingernail infections is to permanently remove the edge of the nail so that it no longer “digs in” to the surrounding soft tissues.

Obviously, Sergio is going to have to fight through the discomfort of the infected nail to play is best. I wish him well.
